You’ve probably heard about horror stories involving expensive fares and some rude, unprofessional drivers on Grab. You might’ve experienced them yourself, too. Well, we have no other choice for now, as Uber has ceased its Philippine operations since April 16.
But have you ever thought about your safety when riding a Grab car? For instance, what would happen when you meet an accident on board a Grab car? Is there a Grab insurance to pay for injuries, death, or medical expenses?
Is it really safe to ride with Grab? Let’s check the safety measures Grab has in place for the riding public.
Grab Insurance Coverage for Personal Accident
Grab isn’t different from other transportation modes. Accidents happen even to the safest cars and most careful drivers. For instance, a Grab car smashed into a glass wall of a school in San Juan City last year. Nobody died or got injured, but the passenger was hurt. The driver was said to be sleepy during the incident.
This and other cases of road mishaps highlight the importance of car insurance. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Department of Transportation require Transport Network Companies (TNCs) like Grab to have the Passenger Personal Accident Insurance Program.
An LTFRB memorandum also states that passengers of public utility vehicles are entitled to a maximum benefit of PHP 200,000 for accidental injuries and death.
For its part, Grab Philippines got a private insurance company, the Great American Insurance Group, to provide a personal accident insurance policy to all its partner-drivers and passengers.
What Does the Grab Insurance Cover?
Grab insures drivers and passengers for injuries, permanent disability, or death due to an accident that occurs anytime from boarding to drop-off. The Grab car insurance also covers medical expenses for injury treatments within 30 days of the accident and until 30 more days for follow-up treatment.
If you get into an accident while riding a Grab car, you can claim up to PHP 20,000 for medical reimbursements. For death or permanent disability, your family can claim up to PHP 200,000.
Exemptions to the Grab insurance coverage include driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and complications from pregnancy-related or pre-existing medical conditions.
Grab In-App Safety Features for Riders
If you often book a ride with Grab, you’re familiar with the in-app feature that allows you to get the driver’s name and rating, as well as the car’s plate number.
Your loved ones also won’t have to worry about your safety while commuting, as you can send them a link that lets them track your whereabouts in real time. The Share My Ride feature also provides them with details about the driver and car.
Grab also protects passenger privacy by automatically deleting all conversations on GrabChat with the driver soon after drop-off.
Grab’s Driver Community Guidelines
To ensure professional conduct and passenger safety, Grab issued guidelines for its drivers to follow.
Grab drivers need to observe the following rules, among many others:
- Never initiate contact with a passenger through text, calls, or in person (Drivers are encouraged, though, to return belongings that passengers left behind in their vehicles.)
- Obey all traffic laws and regulations, such as using turn signals when turning and driving within speed limits.
- Never use a phone while driving (A phone mount is required for using a navigation app to get driving directions.)
- Avoid sudden acceleration and braking.
- Never drive when drunk or after taking heavy medications.
- Accept bookings from PWDs (persons with disabilities) with service animals.
- Never ask a passenger to cancel a Grab booking.
A driver who violates Grab’s Driver Community Guidelines will face blacklisting, disqualification for incentives, or suspension/termination from the Grab platform.
Other Measures to Boost Passenger Safety
Grab also implements other safety measures to minimize road accidents involving its drivers and passengers.
- Background checks on drivers
- Driver’s training on defensive driving, first aid, disaster preparedness and rescue, and legal awareness
- Vehicle inspections
- Verification of driver’s license and Grab car insurance
- Road assistance in Metro Manila from drivers trained by certified rescuers and the Philippine Red Cross
Apart from the higher fares and driver misconduct, safety should also be a major concern about Grab as a ride-hailing service. Remember: we have only one choice, at least for now. If Grab fails to keep its passengers safe on the road and be accountable for any accident involving its vehicles, we’ve got no alternative.
