SMART Money in The Philippines (Part 2): The Features of the SMART Money MasterCards

Nowadays, one can use the SMART Money technology via either the SMART Mobile Phones or the SMART Money MasterCards. However, we must register for the SMART Money if we wish to enjoy the privileges provided by this nice piece of technology.

How to Register for the SMART Money?

In order to avail of the SMART Money facilities, users need to register through the SMART Menu or SMS in order to sign-up for the SMART Money. At the same time, users also have to pay a visit to Smart Wireless Centre to apply for the SMART Money MasterCard. They must bring at least a valid ID to get approval for their applications.

The Types of SMART Money MasterCard

There are 2 types of SMART Money MasterCards:

  1. The Personalized SMART Money MasterCards
  • It is the card with your name printed in front of it. Since there is no national ID system in The Philippines, a SMART Money can truly become a part of the user’s identity.
  • The transaction fee is P120.
  • The Metro Manila subscribers have to wait for 7 days to get their cards while users in the provincial areas have to wait for 14 days. (There’s another alternative- the Instant SMART Money Card.)

       2.  The Instant SMART Money MasterCards

  • The Instant Card allows users to conduct transactions immediately after their registration without the need to wait for the card to be mailed to their home. This card has a generic name “SMART Money” printed in front of it.
  • The transaction fee is P100.00.
  • The card validity period of an Instant SMART Money Card is 2 years.
  • Once renewed with a personalized card, the card will be valid for uses in the next 5 years.

Are You Eligible For The SMART Money Card?

You are eligible to apply for a SMART Money MasterCard if you can fulfil all the following conditions:

  • A SMART subscriber ( for either Prepaid, Postpaid or Talk N Text)
  • Residing in The Philippines at the time of application
  • If the age of user is between 7 to 11 years old, he/she must have the consent from his/her parent or guardian

The SMART Money Card is opened for anyone who resides in The Philippines, regardless of citizenship. There are no financial documents required for the applications of the SMART Money.

However, there are two account numbers you need to bear in mind: the SMART Money account number and the 16-digit SMART Money MasterCard number which will be used for conducting money transactions.

The Fees and Charges of Transaction via the SMART Menu

With SMART Money, you can perform various money transactions by just a few clicks on your mobile phones. However, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. In exchange for the accessibility and flexibility, we have to pay the fees for every transaction. But don’t worry, as the fees and charges are reasonable and acceptable.

A fee of P2.50 will be charged upon the users for the following transactions:

  • Balance Inquiry
  • Internet Transaction
  • Reloading
  • Purchase
  • Fund Transfer (from a SMART Money account to another SMART Money Account)
  • Bill Payment
  • Other phone transactions

One of the advantages the SMART Money has over a regular bank account is the zero annual fees. The maximum withdrawal amount per day is P20,000 while the purchase amount is up to P50,000 per day. On the other hand, the maximum amount that can be transferred per transaction is P10,000.
