PLDT announced that they were able to attain double-digit growth for their local home broadband subscriber base and that they were able to hold close to 70% of the market. PLDT’s myDSL and myBro broadband brands hold the number 1 and 2 spots in the local broadband market, according to PLDT HOME EVP and Head of Home Business Ariel Fermin.

“We expect to sustain this robust double-digit performance as we aggressively expand our customer base,” Fermin adds.

In the press release, Fermin also touted that they have added more content to their Fibr service. PLDT HOME’s Fibr service is the fiber optic cable-based broadband service they are now offering to over 800 subdivisions across the Philippines. This service provides connection speeds of up to 100 mbps.

In line with their growth plans in the broadband space, PLDT is said to be spending about two-thirds of their P29 billion capital expenditure budget in 2014 for its broadband business. The Philippine Star cited PLDT President Napoleon Nazareno as saying that about 65% of their capex for next year will be allocated for the expansion of their broadband business while 25% will go to their fiber optic network.

PLDT Broadband Numbers

According to PLDT’s 2013 third quarter results, they have a total of 3.3 million broadband subscribers for the first nine months of the year. Their Smart Broadband service has a subscriber base of over 1.8 million with 1.3 million of those on the prepaid service. Sun Cellular on the other hand, has a subscriber base of over 500,000.

PLDT’s fixed broadband subscriber base added over 100,000 new subscribers. This brings the total to 950,000 or 46% of the fixed line subscriber base.

The same report says that PLDT’s total broadband and internet revenues for the first nine months of the year totalled P19.5 billion, a 16% year-on-year increase. This unit now accounts for 16% of the PLDT group’s service revenue. PLDT Group’s fixed broadband business saw a 9% increase in revenue for the same period to P9.1 billion.

Globe’s Broadband Business

Globe hasn’t released its 3rd quarter results on its website as of this writing but their 2nd quarter results reveal that they closed the first half of the year with 1.8 million broadband subscribers. This figure is up 15% from the same period last year.

Globe’s broadband revenues for the first half of 2013 reached P5.1 billion compared to P4.1 billion in the same period last year so this represents a 25% year-on-year increase. The growth was driven by the “healthy demand for both wireless and wired broadband offerings.”

Globe launched several new products leading up to the quarter which helped them achieve double-digit growth. These included a free broadband 1MBPs or 3GB per month service bundled with their Landline Plan 799 that they offered under their Tattoo@Home brand. They also gave their subscribers a Tattoo Enjoy Card that allowed their subscribers access to perks and discounts to over 240 brands.

Globe also introduced a lower-priced Tattoo Prepaid Lifestyle stick that also provided their subscribers with freebies and discounts.
