There’s no denying gadgets are an integral part of our daily lives. From smartphones and laptops to the nitty-gritty of how much hard drive space or megapixels to get, we are bombarded with the wide selection of gadgets and extra features to choose from.
Enter tech blogs and the people behind them. It's a great thing there are fellow Filipinos who are passionate about sharing their expertise in various fields of technology.
We have rounded up 10 of our favorite tech bloggers to share their tips on what features to consider before making that next big purchase!
Mark of TechPinas[1]
Will you tell us a little something about the blog and how it started?
It’s funny how I started my blog based on the Z61m Thinkpad I bought during the Beijing Olympics last 2008. This was when my love for gadgets started.
From there, Tech Pinas was born out of my primary vision to share gadget specifications and beyond to help build a tech-informed, tech-empowered nation.
What would be the best advice you can give to consumers before deciding on buying a gadget/product?
For consumers who are planning to purchase a gadget soon, I would advise them to read reviews first and to watch videos on YouTube about the product that are eyeing. It's always good to be properly informed before spending hard-earned money on a particular device.
Meanwhile, my advice to young Filipinos who are thinking about starting a tech blog is to do it for the love of technology itself and not just because they want to earn from blogging. It's also good to blog for the benefit of our country and of our fellow Filipinos.
Daniel of Pinoy Techno Guide[2]
Will you tell us a little something about the blog and how it started?
I started blogging on PTG back in 2012. At first, I wrote how-to articles, but eventually, the blog morphed into a gadget blog since more readers look for those articles. In March 2013, I quit my job and focused on my blog.
What would be the best advice you can give to consumers before deciding on buying a gadget/product?
Research. Many simply go to the malls and buy a phone or tablet without prior knowledge. To get the most value out of your money, read tech blogs and try to choose a gadget that suits your budget but with positive reviews.
Giancarlo of Gadget Pilipinas
Will you tell us a little something about the blog and how it started?
Gadget Pilipinas is one of the top tech websites in the Philippines. Today, Gadget Pilipinas has over 25,340 Facebook fans, 9,037 Twitter followers, 1,993 Youtube subscribers and an average of 85,000 unique blog readers every month.
I have launched successful several digital campaigns for other brands, and have indeed proven that digital promotions through blogging and social media indeed work.
What would be the best advice you can give to consumers before deciding on buying a gadget/product?
Filipinos, most of the time, look at price over function. But a healthy mix of both is the golden ticket to a memorable and remorseless purchase. When buying gadgets, we recommend Filipinos take a look at needs first before wants, have alternatives, look at the price, and then make a decision to purchase.
Wayne of Geeky Pinas[3]
Will you tell us a little something about the blog and how it started?
I wanted to create a tech website that would share useful information with our fellow Filipinos (thus how the name was created). It just started as a hobby website where different write-ups were produced as long as it is related to the Philippines. As time went by, I and my co-writers eventually did more write-ups about tech and gadgets reviews as we are geeks who love anything related to technology. Also, we are graduates of BS Information Technology from DBTC Mandaluyong.
We eventually gained loyal fans and readers of our site and last year we were happy to be nominated as one of the finalist in the Globe Tattoo Best Tech Blog/MicroBlog Award.
What would be the best advice you can give to consumers before deciding on buying a gadget/product?
As an individual who also buys my own gadgets/things, the best advice that I can give to consumers deciding on what to buy is to do your research first. It's really tempting to impulse buy when gadgets are first announced or released, but sometimes they can cost much more and some may have initial problems/bugs. When you wait, you can have better prices and well-developed products.
Check out what you need first, as sometimes we tend to buy because it's popular or cool without thinking if we really need it (like buying a high-end pricey smartphone when you'll just use it for texting & calls only) and at the end of the day it may just end up in your pile of gadgets that you rarely use. You can do research for gadgets/product reviews that usually tech blogs like ours provide, so you can ensure the actual look and build of the item and hear the opinion of the reviewer before deciding on what to buy.
Also, compare prices first as you can determine the good versus the bad deal. But sometimes it's not just about the price. Consider the quality and after-sale support (warranty and replacement policies) to be provided by the store when buying. Be a wise consumer; spend less by doing your research first!
Roman of Techolo[4]
Will you tell us a little something about the blog and how it started?
The website Techolo started actually as a website for Zune music players in the Philippines. It evolved into a general technology and product reviews site mainly because of the boom in the technology consumer product sector and the fact that I just had time and cool products to share and write about.
What would be the best advice you can give to consumers before deciding on buying a gadget/product?
My best advice in buying a gadget or any product is to buy something that you’ll actually use and add value to your current needs and situation.
For gadgets, avoid buying brand new items at launch. Let the early adopters review them first. The current fast trend in today’s consumer products tends to have an effect on the quality of devices. This lets you avoid risky first-in-line issues arising from initial production runs. Consider yourself lucky if the issues could be fixed by a software patch. I’d suggest waiting 2 to 3 months. You might save some money too.
JP of Jaypee Online[5]
Will you tell us a little something about the blog and how it started?
Back in 2002, I created JaypeeOnline as my personal blog/website where I could share my experiences and thoughts about random things. I started out using Yahoo! Geocities and then moved to Blogger. Then I discovered WordPress in 2005 and it's what I've been using ever since.
After learning more about blogging and its potential, I decided to become more serious about it and focus on a specific niche. For someone who loved computers and gadgets, the obvious choice was technology.
From 2007 to 2010, JaypeeOnline was considered one of the top blogs in the Philippines. It was a finalist in the Philippine Blog Awards Technology Category in 2007 and 2009 and eventually won the title in 2010.
What would be the best advice you can give to consumers before deciding on buying a gadget/product?
Set up a budget. It will not only prevent you from overspending but it will also help you narrow down your options.
Read product reviews. I always make sure that I read the product reviews before buying something. The best way to know more about a product is from other customers/users.
Compare prices. With the help of the Internet, it's very easy to look up and compare prices. Spending some time comparing prices online will help you save money.
Use coupons. Before I purchase something, I check online for any available coupons or promo codes. Once, I was able to save $580 by using a coupon I found online.
Price match. I know this doesn't work in some places but if it's possible, ask if the business establishment allows price matches. I've saved a lot of money for myself, family and friends, by using price matching.
Cesar of Pinoy Metro Geek[6]
Will you tell us a little something about the blog and how it started?
The blog started in July of 2011 as a personal tech blog of a potential first-time smartphone buyer; and eventually, it became a content-driven tech site for relevant stories in social media, smartphones, apps, gadgets and everything in the technology niche.
What would be the best advice you can give to consumers before deciding on buying a gadget/product?
Before making a purchase, it is important to decide what features of a product you really need. Determine the amount of money that you are willing to pay and do your own product research. This includes reading reviews, soliciting general brand information and finding better deals.
